About Megan McLaughlin
Candidate for Re-election to Fairfax County School Board

Megan McLaughlin and her husband Jim (W.T. Woodson High School alumnus) moved to the Braddock District in 2000, where they have raised their three sons.  All three boys attended FCPS schools and graduated from Woodson.

Her personal, educational and prior employment background includes:

  • College admissions officer for Georgetown University,
  • Volunteer instructor/counselor for Fairfax County Juvenile & Domestic Relations Court
  • Employment Developer for Easter Seals Adult Day Habilitation facility.
  • Daughter of a former public school teacher/assistant principal
  • Undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania
  • Master's degree in Social Work from the University of Maryland.

Prior to being elected to the School Board in 2011, Megan was a veteran education advocate who co-founded and led FAIRGRADE and the Fairfax Education Coalition. Megan has also served our community as a PTA President and Executive Board Member,  Fairfax Zero Tolerance Reform (FZTR) Special Advisor, Co-chair of the coalition to stop the Woodson Bus Depot, 2003 Braddock School Bond representative, Member of RENEW (renovate W.T. Woodson HS.), NVSL Swim Team Representative and Board Member for Rutherford Pool,  and BRYC Assistant Soccer Coach.

MEGAN'S LEADERSHIP ROLES & SIGNATURE ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER THESE PAST 8 YEARS:

  • Chairman of Budget Committee (2019-20)
  • Chairman of Audit Committee (2018-19)
  • Chairman of Governance Committee (2017-18)
  • 6 year member of the Joint County/FCPS Successful Children & Youth Policy Team (SCYPT) which focuses on issues related to early childhood education, health and wellness, truancy and juvenile justice, and equity for all
  • Member of Fairfax County Sports Tourism Task Force (2018-19)
  • Member of the Fairfax County/FCPS Synthetic Turf Task Force which yielded a joint county/schools agreement to provide $9M (over 3 years) to help fund eight remaining communities in need of these turf fields.
  • Lobbied for Competitive Teacher Compensation & Smaller Class Sizes
  • Advocated for the creation of the Auditor General and Senior Audit Manager positions
     
  • Advocated for improved student discipline practices which has yielded fewer out-of-school suspensions and involuntary school transfers
     
  • Advocated for the Restoration of High School Honors Courses which yielded honors courses in English and Social Studies for 11th and 12th grade students.
     
  • Advocated for Later High School Start Times
  • Lobbied for More Balanced Student and Teacher Workloads
  • Advocated for Full-Day Mondays and Longer Elementary School Recess
  • Lobbied for the CDC (Center for Disease Control) to investigate and report on youth suicides in Fairfax County which yielded the CDC's 2015 report
     
  • Advocated for a Caring Culture and Due Process Rights for FCPS Employees
  • 2-year Member of FCPS' annual Teen Stress Summit Advisory Group
     
  • Collaborated with FCFT (teachers associaton) on its 2013 Teacher Town Hall to strengthen teacher/School Board communication
     
  • Collaborated with Decoding Dyslexia Virginia (DDVA) to strenghthen FCPS' dyslexia services
     
  • Collaborated with the MINDS organization and FCPS to introduce pilot programs in mindfulness instruction for students and teachers
